The Original Four

Four masks, four skills, one perfect score — and a city that never sleeps long enough to stop them.

The Original Four

The Original Four are the founding crew of the Payday franchise: Wolf, Hox, Chains, and Yellowjacket. Brought together by a shared ambition to pull off the perfect bank robbery, they became the iconic masked quartet that defined the Overkill Software series. In Payday: The Heist (2011), the player steps into one of their shoes while the other three operate as AI teammates, each filling a distinct role in the heist. In Payday 2 (2013), all four became simultaneously playable, cementing their place as the face of the franchise.

Lore & Background

The four met in the criminal underworld, each bringing a piece of the puzzle that no single operator could solve alone. Wolf, the strategist and self-appointed leader, had the vision and the nerve to string together a sequence of high-value bank jobs. Hox brought the fire — his explosives could breach any vault door and level any obstacle. Chains was the muscle, a weapons savant whose chain and shotgun made him the closest-quarters threat on the crew. Yellowjacket handled the invisible war: hacking security systems, disabling alarms, and keeping the crew's digital footprint buried. Together they were a machine, each covering the others' blind spots in a way that made the heists feel almost effortless from the inside.

In Their Own Story

The vault door groaned open on its hydraulic rails, and the smell of cold steel and old dust rolled out into the lobby. Wolf checked his watch — two minutes behind schedule — and tapped the comms twice. Hox was already wiring the last charge to the teller cage, his grin barely visible beneath the mask. Chains leaned against the marble column, shotgun across his chest, chain coiled at his hip, watching the security cameras with the patience of a man who had already counted the exit routes. Yellowjacket's fingers flew across a tablet, and the alarm panel blinked from red to a satisfied green. "Clean," Yellow murmured. Wolf nodded. "Clean means we're already gone in ninety seconds. Move." The four melted into the service corridor, boots silent on tile, and the bank behind them was just another building with a hole in its wall.

Reader's Guide

Narrative role: The Original Four are the player's crew. In Payday: The Heist, you select one to control while the remaining three act as AI teammates with scripted behaviors tied to their specialty. In Payday 2, all four are playable at any time, and the three you do not control still appear as AI allies with their signature kit.

Equipment and AI patterns: Hox's AI prioritizes breaching charges and explosive tools, often holding position to set up demolition. Chains' AI favors shotgun fire and close-range chain attacks, pushing forward aggressively. Yellowjacket's AI focuses on hacking terminals, disabling cameras, and providing ranged support. Wolf's AI coordinates the group, calling out objectives and providing tactical cover. Each AI member has a distinct color-coded mask that makes them easy to identify in the chaos.

Heists: The Four appear across the full campaign of both Payday: The Heist and Payday 2, from the early bank jobs through the escalating high-stakes operations. They are present in every standard heist, special events, and the story-driven set pieces.

Difficulty escalation: On Normal and Hard, AI teammates are competent but forgiving. On Veteran, they become more aggressive and take more initiative, while enemies gain better aim and more armor. On Death Wish, the AI crew is noticeably more lethal and the enemy AI is significantly harder to suppress, making the Four's coordination feel more critical than ever.
